
Annual Events
There is always something going on in Maldon whatever the time of year, and hundreds of residents and visitors alike gather to watch and take part in a number of exciting and unique events.
Many local events celebrate local traditions, as well as raising money for local causes, charities and organisations. The most famous of events is the Maldon Mud Race, which sees people travel from all over the world, even as far as Australia to take part in the popular sponsored race.
And with miles of coastline surrounding Maldon, it is no wonder that there are a number of sailing events and boat races held throughout the year, with two annual regatta’s, a Thames Sailing Barge Race and Row 4A Reason sponsored row, to name but a few.
There are also a number of events throughout the year that celebrate the local talent in the area, with the Maldon Art Trail that sees works by local artists displayed in the town. The Maldon Arts Festival that features a range of concerts, workshops and the popular Shakespeare in the Park, and the annual winter pantomime.

Maldon Summer Carnival is an extremely popular event held during the month of August, and has previously been recognised as one of the biggest carnivals in the Essex area.
Look on in amazement as Maldon’s Promenade Park is lit up by a spectacular and colourful firework display to commemorate the gunpowder plot of 5th November 1605.
The famous Maldon Mud Race is believed to have begun around 1973 when a local man at the Queen’s Head pub was dared to don a tuxedo and serve a meal on the banks of the river. The following year locals raced across the river to drink a pint from a waiting barrel of beer before racing back again.
Maldon Town Regatta is an annual event organised by Maldon Little Ship Club. Held in September at the Hythe Quay, the event sees hundreds of people gather on Maldon’s picturesque waterside to enjoy an array of family entertainment both on land and ashore.
The annual Remembrance Parade and Wreath Laying ceremony is held on the closest Sunday to the 11th November, which commemorates Armistice Day when at 11.00am on 11th November 1918 guns ceased fire on the Western Front, signalling the end of World War One.
Shakespeare in the park is an annual summer event held in the months of June or July, produced by mac Theatre in Maldon’s picturesque Promenade Park.
